I posted this question under another topic in another forum and I didn't get any response, so I thought I'd try here.

I've had an eye on a Zoom H4 recorder for a while. I was wondering how it picks up the low frequencies. Most commercial recording equipment just picks up the high stuff so recording something like Prokofiev 5 could be somewhat useless.

Anybody have any experiences recording with one these? Excerpts, solo, or even brass quintet or tuba quartet? Post or PM me if you'd like.

I've had one for about a month and I absolutely love it. I use it to record quintet rehearsals. It does wonderfully throughout the spectrum including low tuba parts. I will be recording a gig tomorrow in a hospital foyer. Marble floors, etc. PM me your email address and I'll email you a sample and you can see for yourself. I'll be using the built in mics. I haven't tried pro mics yet but it will drive them with phantom power.

Highly recommended! I've had mine about a month and love it.

The only caveat -- use good headphones for playback. Cheap headphones don't reproduce the low frequencies of the tuba well, but with decent 'phones, it's a great tool and easy to use.

I am still experimenting with placement and other things, but I am very happy with it and highly recommend it.

One complaint: the very accurate recordings are a leeetle too accurate sometimes for my comfort and self-esteem.
