I was out of country playing in Europe during the search for Jake's replacement. Was wondering if anyone remembered who the semi-finalists and finalists were during the selection process. Never really heard all of the details on this. Brian...you probably could fill me in on this. Dave

Am I led to believe that this is a very controversial subject?

wasn't that like 16 years ago ?
Christian,
(who has no idea if it's a controversial topic or if any of the tubenet readers who were not in diapers at that time recall the results)

I don't know why it would be controversial.
Anyway, I think Dave Fedderly was in the finals - if not the runner-up.

Rex Martin was a finalist, if not the runner up.
BTW, hearing Tony Kniffen warm up prior to his audition is one of the reasons I am now an engineer, and no longer pursuing a professional career as an orchestral tubist. Just an unbelievable sound! He was the only finalist chosen the day he auditioned.
The story I heard was that tony was taking a lesson with Mr. Jacobs, who told him he should go down to Orchestra Hall and take the audition, since one of the preliminary rounds was taking place that day. Mr. Jacobs made a phone call, Tony played, and almost got the job.
