These recordings are AMAZING. No one does SHostakovich better than the Russians. For obvious reasons. Just spectacular playing. The ferocity of the brass is amazing.

Anyone know who the bass trombone and tuba players are on the following recordings?...and what equipment they are using.?
The musicianship on these recordings is phenomenal and the brass playing is exceptional, especially the bass trombone and tuba. Any information would be very helpful.

I have the recording of Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Phil. on Shostakovich 5 and 9. This is a great recording as are most Bernstein recordings.

I'm pretty sure that is Andrey Zhdanov (may be way off on the spelling) and he was playing a beater of a tuba. The recording is not of the principal player (the name has skipped my mind), the common 1965 recordings are from a seven week tour in the United States and their prinicipal did not make the trip for philosophical/political reasons. I wrote a thesis in 2003 about Shostakovich (for an independent research and study requirement) and spoke with Leonid Kogan's (famous Russian violinist) son via e-mail.

Thanks or the responses and information so far everyone. Both of the Kondrashin recordings were done in Moscow. The back of the 13th Symphony says that the Russian Government has banned perfrormances of this piece. It is the premiere recording of SHostakovich 13. So I would imagine it would be the Principal player. Any idea who that was? He's a bad *** whoever it is. One of the most gorgeous sounds I have ever heard come out of any instrument. Speaking of that, any idea what he was playing on.

Can you tell me more about the recordings? Date, etc. The only recordings I've heard from this group (in 1965) were during the tour in the US and they were made here in the states.

The 13th was recorded on November 20th 1965 in Moscow, a box on the back states...

"This performance of the Shostakobvich 13th Symphony is the actual live performance recorded in Moscow on November 20th 1965, therefore please allow for audienece noises. Since that time the Russian Government has banned the performance of this work. The performance is of prime importance and you will surely be captivated with the sincere poigniancy of the music."

Its a kick *** recording. Just blew me away. The Stepan Razin/ Symphony No. 9 recording is from 1966. The Execution of STepan Razin is quite possibly my new favorite piece. Absolutely terrifying brass playing, bone crushing bass trombone and tuba. Damn, I love SHostakovich.
