I also like hearing our brethren in the basement register and in the orchestra often have almost as much comradary with them as the rest of the brass section.

The sound of the contra bassoon always amuses me - its so rude sounding! However, it is great to play with - I am sure I can sometimes feel sympathetic vibrations within the tuba.

However, as much as I enjoy the sound of the other low instruments, nothing anywhere near equals the sonorous tone of the tuba :wink:

A friend of mine in college did his entire senior recital on contrabassoon. I think it was the first (and likely only) time that's happened. It was great, he had a ton of fun, and the audience loved it. It was ridiculous, in the best sense of the work. :)

Anthony Braxton has done some very cool things on contrabass saxophone and contrabass clarinet.
