I will be playing Taras Bulba in the New Year and would therefore appreciate a copy of the tuba part for personal practice purposes, if anyone can help (I can't find it in any excerpt book).

Alternatively, if you have played it, can you tell me anything about the part. What is its range? Would I be better to take along my Eb, or CC? Does it require a mute?

Thanks for any help.

Great Piece

This is a pretty meaty part and most of the big sections are done with the trombones, so you'll want whatever instrument you have access to that will allow you to sound clean out in the hall when playing unison low stuff with the trombones. You don't need a huge organ like sound for this piece, but you do need control....think more Strauss than Mahler. I don't recall there being anything that is muted, but it's been 10 years since I've played this. Nothing is hard, but you'll want to look it over before the first rehearsal. I'm sorry I don't have a copy of the part!

You'll enjoy this piece....lots of fun!

Me again

Use the CC - there is a mighty organ bit and it helps to have the 32 foot rather that the 16 (if you see what I mean)

Bump...

Can anyone help with a tuba part for practice purposes?

PS I am going to be playing this under the great Janacek conductor, Sir Charles MacKerras, so am particularly keen to do a good job!

One final bump to see if anyone can help with a part now the holidays are over!

Also, can anyone suggest a good recording of Taras Bulba to hear the tuba part?

I haven't got a copy of the part, but I really like the recording by the Bavarian Radio Symphony undir Kubelik, from around 1970. On my CD, the BRSO also plays Missa Glagolskaja.

Since you will be playing under Mackerras, his recording with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra suggests itself.

Hi,

Played it with the CBSO last year. It is a great piece of music and you will love it. Keep it on EEb if I were you... Although I have now got a CC to see what all the fuss is about!

Best wishes.

I just heard a great recording the other night by the Cleveland Orchestra, Dohnanyi conducting. Sounds awesome, I hope you do well!
