For all fans of the vintage CSO brass section, and of Arnold Jacobs in particular (along with Ed Kleinhammer, Bud Herseth, et al) --

The GREAT CSO recording of Symphonie fantastique (along with the Francs-juges overture of Berlioz) are now available again through Arkivmusic.com in their ArkivCD on-demand series. You can find it by searching the ArkivCDs for Berlioz and the CD number is London Decca Jubilee ZLM417-705. This performance is THE one and is superior to the Abbado/CSO Sym fantastique.

Also available there on the ArkivCD series is the great Reiner conducts Wagner recording -- highly recommended! That CD number is RCA Red Seal 4738. This CD contains excerpts from Meistersinger and Gotterdammerung, and is awesome.

Enjoy!

They also have the 1987 Bruckner Symphony No.8 by the North German Radio Symphony and Gunter Wand (RCA Victor Red Seal Catalog #: 60364). Amazing recording, best recording there is for tuba. Walter Hilgers is amazing. Just absolutely astounding playing. It was recorded in the Lubeck Cathedral. Wait until you hear the reverb on the last note...
