Just wondering anyone's opinions on this new tuba. At first, I was hearing nothing but great things about them, one of the best tubas in some cases. But recently people have been telling me that they're not that great and I should expect to see a lot of used ones for sale come the end of 2004-beginning of 2005. Any thoughts?

LV,
I thought you did own one for a bit, but most importantly, what would you change. Did you have laquer or silver?

I've been waiting for this instrument since March and I had to try it, I wasn't conducting the poll to influence my decision. If all 42 people voted for terrible horn, I probably still would have tried it. Just wanted to know what people thought because I'm hearing some different opinions now that they're out. Personally, I think they're semi great but the MW 2000 is obviously better. Any other opinions?

Congratulations on your new horn. No matter what anyone else may say, if it plays well for you that's all that matters. The bottom line is that this horn shouldn't be a limiting factor on your ability to make music. It's a tuba, the rest is up to you.
Vented Valves

I've noticed that while I've been playing the living daylights out of this instrument, all of the piston valves (1-4) are vented! What does this do? I just don't understand the advantages/disadvantages of vented valves.

Vented valves allow you to pull the tuning slides while playing without having to worry about any popping.

Is that the only thing they do?

Yes, and much more easily than piston valves.
In fact, most Mirafone CC's come from the factory already vented.
Basically, the vent is a small hole drilled between the knuckles going to the valve tubing.
If you feel like dealing with him...

I had a Miraphone 1291 on order from Vince at the Tuba Exchange. I got sick of waiting so I took one from Dillon's instead. Also the drive was a lot less, but anyway, if you feel like dealing with Vince and John Simonetti down there in North Carolina, they just got in a laquer Miraphone 1291 this morning, July 8. I would highly doubt he has anyone else waiting, but it is a great horn, actually I voted for semi-great on my poll thingy, and I encourage you guys, if you're looking for a decent CC Tuba, give this one a shot. That is, only if you feel like dealing with Vince and his god awful voice, if you've ever talked to him you know what I mean...
My 2 cents
