I just spent a couple of hours practicing on my 'Frankencontra' (in G) and switched over to my CC to practice stuff for my tuba lessons. I just noticed that G and CC seem to have the same fingerings for notes. Is that a correct observation?

Assuming that you play contra in treble clef (like most of us did before this danged Bb rule), then yes, the fingerings are the same -- C, E, and G are open, etc.

I've seen some contra music that was written in bass clef with the intent of having the same fingerings as CC tuba, just as you describe. I had an easier time than I expected when trying CC tuba, because I at least knew the note name-to-finger button relationships.

Heck, I had an easy time in high school trying out an Eb tuba in a quintet rehearsal because I already knew treble clef reasonably well from corps -- and that was after less than a year on tuba.
