Rodeo question

hey,
so in the bar before rehersal #1 in Buckaroo Holiday, there are not enough beats in the bar (short one eight note). I listened to the recording and I'm not entirely sure what the tuba is doing in that bar. I think I know what it is, but does anyone who has played this know for sure.
Thanks for you help,
Bill

That measure should be a dotted-quarter note, an eighth rest and two quarter notes.

Richard Brown! Haven't seen you in many moons. It's Richard Rusk. I recently posted a piece about John Shideler and the experience of working for him. Check it out: http://richinnola.livejournal.com/535.html" target="_blank

I had forgotten what Merle Evans said about John's sound. But when I saw it, it reminded me of something I forgot to write about. We used to call John's horn, the "E flat alto Lazer". Remember him "altoing" some poor first of may who was lost? He'd turn around and play the melody right in their face to show them where we were. I remember one kid one time who almost dropped his trumpet. lol

Where are you these days? Are you still playing? I quit for almost 30 years, but I've recently started trying to get my chops back. Here's a hint. it's a lot easier to keep your chops up than it is to get them back. :/ I see this is a very old post, but maybe you'll see this reply.

Well, Richard Brown won't be seeing my reply to his John Shideler post. I was just looking for him on the internet, and found his obituary. He died in 2009. He was one of the best tuba players I ever worked with.

Actually, guys, this post is about the tuba part in the ballet Rodeo ("ro-day-o"), not rodeo bands.

I never thought I would see the day when live performances of "Ro-day-o" out number the performances by rodeo bands, but they do now. Those days are pretty much gone and it is a shame that the new generation of tuba players will never have the chance to work for people like John.

I'm also a Shideler veteran!

I can honestly say that at tempo, that was the hardest music I've ever played.

Well, it's amazing to see all you Shideler alumni here. Maybe we should start a "I played with John Shideler" thread. I'll leave it to one of you guys, since I'm sort of an imposter on this forum, being a trombone player. I only registered in hopes of connecting with my old friend Richard Brown, who sadly died, as I later discovered.

UncleBeer, it was fiendishly hard to play at John's tempos. Playing in John's bands developed some features of my playing, maybe at expense of some others. I used to tell people, "I may not be the best trombone player you'll ever hear, but I can confidently say that I'm the LOUDEST, FASTEST trombone player you'll ever hear." lol

Bloke, Go Galop, now there's a title I haven't thought of in years.

I sent both you guys messages. Hope you'll get in touch.
