I'm working on an upcoming project, and some answers would be helpful. I will limit this to tuba solos for the time being.

Journey- John Stevens

Journey... I've worked that up, but definitely don't dare to be the first to attempt to record it. It's a great recital piece if your audience has a very long attention span. I love the work.. it's a big challenge, and very worthwhile. I think Mr. Pokorny should be the only one to attempt to record that one (or at least the first one, other than the many bootlegs that are floating around out there).

Agreed. Sumner Erickson had the right idea with his CD of Vasiliev études.

Dave Zerkel may be planning a CD (or downloadable recording?) that features contrabass tuba...

I have a CD that showed up in my mailbox unsolicited about seven or eight years ago by Jae Young Heo. He recorded Beelzebub.

I have that same Jae Hao CD too....I also have 2 recordings of Wonderland Duets. One of them is in German. The German one is much more entertaining to listen to as the guy really gets into the narration. I do have the John Stevens recording of Triumph, but it is on LP. I believe however, Ben Pierce recorded it on his Wheels of Life CD.

Gene Pokorny played the Barry McKimm concerto on contrabass it's a nice piece. You can get a recording from the publisher of the piano and tuba version and the orchestra and tuba version. The orchestra version is much cooler.

I would love to hear recordings of great Italian or German art songs with CC tuba and piano. I've played some Schubert before and I think it works well. I don't know if someone could pull it off, but Winterreise or Die Schone Mullerin would be cool (love those pieces).

was very cool and could be applied to tuba. You could do the Hadad, Air and Bouree, Variations on Judus Macabeus (etc..) all on CC and it would be accessible to younger players. I've been told that when Dave Kirk does a recital there is always a CC tuba piece and it's usually something like those pieces.

That and a commercial recording of Songs of Ascent by Kellaway (def NOT a CC tuba piece) would be amazing.

I have talked with Mr Zerkel recently regarding his next project. He plans to record the Haddad, et al.. typical college freshamn/sophmore pieces on CC tuba as his next entry into the Cd world.

Right now, I am lining up a CD recording project. I've got a piece being commissioned right now for me, and another that was written for me a while back. I'd like to record a CD of unrecorded music, as all music worth playing is worht having a recording to listen to. I'm also going to try for the rights to 2 other pieces, which I will not share until I have secured them.

Keep the ideas coming! I really appreciate all the suggestions!

I can't find it online to listen to at first blush, but there's a GREAT recording of Barnacle Bill the Sailor (no, not variations, just the tune) by Bix Beiderbeck, Joe Venuti, and I'm not sure who all else. Actually, Venuti was not supposed to be on the recording, but happened by the studio and stopped in to see who was in there, and was invited to join.
There's an introduction, an instrumental verse and chorus, and then the verse and chorus vocals. Another instrumental chorus, another vocal verse/chorus. Then, Venuti adds his little bit...under (or, actually, over) the group singing "Barnacle Bill The Sailor", you hear a distinct voice saying "Barnacle Bill the S***head". At the very end, that line is repeated, even more prominently.

And, yes, this was 1930.

Pretty amazing recording, and funny too.

I agree that there is certainly a void to be filled with projects discussed above, such as that of Mr Zerkel; such CDs are a great resource for undergraduate (and graduate) students -- plus their instructors. I heartily encourage more of these -- especially those played on the large instrument rather than bass tuba. Also, the same encouragement applies to the new recording by Mr Stuckmeyer; more of the same are very useful.

On a different thought, has the Rolf Wilhelm Concerto been recorded? I would add that to "the list."

Oh, I just thought of another one. The Tony Plog Tuba Concerto!

For those who wanted a recording of "Beelzebub"

There is one played by Arnold Jacobs with a student band from Gunnison, CO on the new "Legacy of an Artist" CD from Summit. Also included is the old standard "Solo Pomposo" and other gems.

I am trying to get the rights to Barnacle Bill, as we speak. That's been my bread and butter piece for a while now. I wish that I could have a recording with band.. but there are legal implications that I don't wish to deal with, having a military band record.. etc...

I'm not sure all of my collegues would volunteer their time to record something that will benefit me.

Either way, I'll get the rights, and record w/piano.

Right now, the lineup is:

I'll be adding a little more to fill out a disc.. that's where suggestions here are helpful. I want this to be an accessible disc for students and enjoyable, with not so serious music.

If this is not an absolute flop, I'll consider recording some more "challenging" repertoire... Except Song of Ascent... I'd rather keep me chops in some sort of non-gelatinous form
