Does anyone know where I could get a recording of this piece? It doesn't look like Sotto Voce has recorded it, but I could be wrong.
Thanks!
Ryan

Ryan,
Hi! I don't believe anyone has recorded this work yet. Mvt.'s 1 & 2 were required for the Budapest ITEC Competition, but beyond that, I've never even heard a complete performance of the work. Sotto Voce is indeed working on the piece, and will have it in our concert cycle for Fall 2007.
There is a quintet version of the piece as well, and it is very often performed by the Spanish Brass. The Wisconsin Brass quintet will perform this version on a Wisconsin Public Radio broadcast this April as well. Come to think of it, I might have a recording of the Illinois State Faculty Brass performing this work on its quintet premiere--email me if this interests you.
To all other interested parties the work can be found here:

Good luck Ryan, and if the Marine Quartet performs the quartet verison sometime soon, please let me know!
Regards,

Mike,
Thanks alot for the info! We just started working on the piece and we like it alot. We (the quartet) are planning a mini-tour of some universities in Pennsylvania and Ohio at the end of March and we definitely want to put it on the program. I will make an official announcement about the tour as soon as it is set in stone. We would love to get our hands on a recording if you have one, it would be nice to be able to listen to it to get a better feel for all the mixed meters. Congrats on another great piece, I'm sure Four Miniatures will become a staple of the rep. Please let me know what I need to do to get a hold of a recording.
Thanks!

Ken,
I have had some success in converting tuba quartets to brass quintets and vice-versa, but I've also had my share of disasters (Consequences, for one). Four Miniatures was actually written a little differently than other works. I wrote it as a brass quintet with a tuba quartet very much in mind. So I was sort of co-writing the whole time...thanks to that approach, I think the work is pretty accessible by both groups. The quartet version, however, I must say is pretty challenging...but that might just be because I was writing for trumpets, etc., and euphoniums simply have to step up to the plate.
Sounds like the Marine Quartet will have it out there in performance later this spring, so I look forward to hearing them knock the snot out of it!
Best wishes,
Mike

Ken,
Actually, I very much prefer to slim down rather than to add--esp. when creating tuba/euph. literature. I always say that less is more in writing for low brass! It's amazing how great octaves and unisons sound with tubas and how not-great they sound with the heterogenous sounds of a brass quintet. So, while getting rid of a quintet voice was slightly challenging at times, most vertical sonorities didn't have more than 4 pitches, so it wasn't all that hard...and with writing the work with quartet in mind helped me to not create 5 voice chords in the first place in this instance.
