Well, now this is not going to be easy...but I feel up to the challenge.

1982-88-JHS/HS school horns - Amati and Yamaha 3 valves, Yamaha 321&641, King 4350s and Conn 20ks. Owned - a Conn 36J that was in disrepair bought from Rod Blatimore. King 1240 modified with pull rods, cut down bell with added bracing. Bought that from Stev Dillon, before the store. It was Rick Benjamin's horn. Started my freshman year at Manhattan School of Music with the King until it was stolen. Never saw it again.

1988-92 - Undergrad at MSM. King 1240 Stolen, bought a York 33 BBb top action 4 valve.
Also fixed up the Conn 36J front action at the Music Shop in Boonton, NJ. Had an upright bell made by Tom Govelitz out of a Conn 36k bell and valves replated and pull rods added. Sold that to Paul Dosier in Boston. Tried to find it after Paul's untimely passing, but heard it ended up in a public school. Senior year sent the York 33 to Bob Rusk to be cut and overhauled w satin silver plating.

1992/93 - Bought my first F-tuba, a Shilke Prototype made from a Yamaha Eb. It had 4 top action valves and and a 5th piston on the side. Sold to and bought back from Scott Mendoker a few times. It now resides with Josh Mandel.

1993-95 - Grad School at San Francisco Conservatory, bought my 2nd F-tuba, an Alex 3+3 valves, had it converted to 5valves with a trigger by Dick Ackright of Best Music. Sold it to someone in the North West, wish I hadn't.

1995-97 - post Grad at Rutgers. Bought Floyd Cooley's left overs that Walter Nirschl put together to make a 6/4 Nirschl/York. Sold the 4/4 Rusk cut, again, regret. The Nirschl/York sounded great but had really whacky intonation. Still wish I hadn't sold it. Had Dillon make a Conn CC 5/4 4 piston 1 rotary valve.

1997-99 - My first Ed job at Potrero Hill MS in SF - bought Scott M's Worchster Conn/Dillon F- tuba. 4 piston 1 rotary valve to match the Conn CC.

1999 - back in NJ to teach, Sold Conn CC - to buy Morris Kainuma's Dillon York CC.

2000-06 - bought a Gnagey/King CC 4 valve. sold to Dmitry Lapin, currently 4 sale, i believe. I think this is when I start buying vairious rare instruments and restoring them: a Martin Mammoth BBb 3 valve which I have a 4 valve section added on to. Sold To Kevin Rascin (sp?). Holton 1919 3 valve, add a 4 valve top action, sold it. Had a 4valve Cerveny BBb helicon, sold it. York EEb Monster with added York Eb Sousa 4 valve set. Sold soon after. Grand Rapids 5/4 top action BBb restored, sold to a student. 2 York 6/4 BBbs. One ended up with the body and valve set of a Holton and a cut down Bell, recently sold, beautiful instrument, more regret.

Around 2007-9 decide to abandon vintage horns for a new Thor and Firebird. Both of these horns end up causing some serious jaw distress, so I sell them in 2011 and return to my BBb roots. Bought a Yamaha 621 F tuba in 2010, sold in 2013. Bought a Conn Donatelli CC in 2010, currently being restored by Martin Wilk along with a BBb Conn Donatelli. Bought and restored a Conn 36K and sold it to Ron Caswell.

Currently playing a Martin 4/4 Renowned with King/MAW valves. Martin Mammoth 6/4 BBb, 4 front action valves and upright one piece bell. Recently bought a Sanders marked MW 45S F tuba that I'm having modified. Really enjoying that horn. Of course I can't forget Old faithful, HN White King "Cadet" 1935 sousaphone, bought 1997ish. (Made more money with this horn playing 20 years worth of parades, Italian Feasts, funerals, etc. than any other!) Conn 40k and 1908 Conn Raincatcher. Other misc horns, Conn BBb Am Superior, Yamaha 612R Bass Bone, Higham BBb, Czech F Helicon, 2 Conn/WoRchester Ebs, 2 York 33 BBbs in various states if disrepair, 1 to be restored as is, the other cut to CC.

I'm sure I've missed a few, but that's pretty close to a complete history.

Is there a twelve step program for us "collector's"?

Hope you enjoyed this installment.

Upgraded in junior high (1965) from cornet, Roth Renyolds to a school owned Conn BBb plastic sousaphone.
1968 School owned Meinl Wessen model 25 BBb.

1976 Got a Conn Eb Sousaphone as a gift. It was little more than a wall hanger. (Sold it in a garage sale.)
1978 Got a 1912 Renowned Martin Eb (for $20).
2011 Purchased a new Kanstul 66T (Eb) from Lee Stofer.
2012 Had Lee Stofer restore the Martin.

Middle School -- Bundy trumpet
9th/10th Grade -- some sort of 3 valve BBb. The 3rd valve stem was busted off, so I had to hold it in place and "be real careful" (yup, that's how I learned to play tuba)
11th/12th grade -- Yamaha 105 (marching) and 201 (band)

College:
Olds 99 (the first tuba I owned)
B&S/Sanders PT-3 (school owned, nice tuba)
Conn 20K (game day horn)
Conn ?? Naked Lady (practice horn, old, ugly, and much better than the 20K!

After college:
VMI 4-valve CC (basically an MW-30)
Miraphone 1291 CC (w/1292 leadpipe)
Cerveny 653
Marzan CC
Miraphone 188

Whoa... I've been playing tuba for almost 20 years now?

started playing trombone in 1970 with an old cavalier trombone that I found in my grampop's attic. My dad had played it back in the day. (brass inner slide so the outer slide did not move well and the spit came out green!)
got a used King Tempo two years later (cool nickel silver bell and clear spit!)
9th grade I made out jazz band so dad bought me a new King 3B (Woo Hoo)
in college bought a Holton Tr 181 bass bone
when i started teaching I bought a Conn 5J tuba with my first check (well not quite)
Sold that to buy a Boosey & Hawkes Eb Imperial in 1985, been playing that baby ever since....

in the meantime I bought and sold many bass bones, a Conn, a few Bachs, an Edwards, a crappy chinese thing; finally settled on a Benge 290.

Also bought a King helicon from Harv and then traded it for the Pan American I have now.

Recently bought an old Yamaha YBB103 to use for strolling ggs when I cant use my helicon.

I also have an authentic Selman alto trombone :) , a jupiter soprano trombone and king 3B silversonic, Benge 175F, Benge 190C, etc.... too many trombones for my own good.

2020 update:
sold the Boosey and bought a Miraphone Norwegian Star Eb
Also bought a Mirafone 187 BBb
and my Dr. Seussaphone, 1924 Buescher BBb converted to rest on the ground in front of me (see avatar)

Starting out:
-scratch & dent Besson 2-20 3PVTBU euph
-Yamaha YEP-201 (this was heavenly by comparison)
-Jupiter JCB-382 (put this one down on risers, then got up. Dang)
-All the tubas in the band closet, including an old Academy Eb 3V, Yamaha 201 BBb, 2 Yamaha YBB-103s, and a Piper (Cerveny) 4-rotor BBb

University and beyond
-Yamaha YEB-321 (still my main outdoor/marching gig horn)
-Yamaha YSL-448G (overblows nicely in rock bands)
-Bach TB300 (my main "jazz horn"...ha)
-Academy trumpet (Costco, bought used, sounds OK)
-Yamaha YTR-2335 (but this one sounds better)
-Yamaha YHR-664 (for duets with my brother)
-Vito clarinet & early Jupiter SFL-507 flute
-Meinl-Weston 2145 CC (my baby, and my main indoor tuba)
-Olds Studio baritone
-Besson 2-20 euphonium
-Boosey&Co. euphonium (work in very slow progress)
And all of this fits in one music storage locker...err, bedroom
Any time at all is tuba time. Watch for the signs.

6th Grade: a silver student flute ( no idea on brand)
7th-9th Grade(first quarter): alto sax-Amati
9th Grade (second quarter-10th: Pan American Sousa (for home learning use only)
Conn 11 or 15J (the BBb with the convertible lead pipes, switch 1 & 3 slides to convert from shoulder to concert)
King 1140 (another home practice tuba)
Spring semester, 10th grade: purchased my own new Cerveny 686-4 BBb. Wish I still had it!
Nov. of 11th Grade: bought my own new silver Yamaha Sousa. I wish I would have kept it...played the Cerveny and Yamaha through high school. School owned YEP-321.

Didn't go to college... Sold Cerveny to fund down on car when truck died...
Moved to LA; mom sold silver Sousa to buy a jacuzzi tub... Didn't ask me about it, but I still owed her some money on it and never made good... Are parents not made if money??

Two years later: 2003-got the itch to play again and bought a 1930s Besson BBb Sousa off eBay for $300. Great player once Harv Hartman got me a first valve and a neck...
Bought two 1953 silver King Sousas off eBay. One of them was amazing! Why did I sell it!? Found a 2340 with detachable upright bell. Joined Long Beach Band that fall.
2005: bought a silver Conn 20K with a Patio Cola bottle stuck in the larger bows. Horn was from 1946. Beautiful horn... 20Ks are just not my thing. Found a 1930s Cleveland/white Sousa... Had it restored. End of 2005: bought a Cervery 781 (red brass) BBb. Was OK.
2006: moved back to Reno... Bought a 20J off eBay. Nice horn. Once belonged to the U. Of Minnesota. Ordered a new model 2341 in Satin silver. Six month wait. Played that tuba from June 2006-Dec. 2009. In 2007 I sold every tuba except the King 2341. To raise funds for my first home purchase. Once I was in the house I bought a Martin Sousa (my avatar) and a Holton revelation Sousa. Sold Holton after a few months... Sold King 2341 after I lost interest in the group and work took a toll on my time 2010). I should have held into it... Good tuba and now much pricier.

2012: decided to get back into playing after a few years... Bought a Miraphone 187. . Good horn, but not my thing... Sold it last March. Silver Elkhart/Buescher Sousa and a Conn 46K Jumbo Sold it lastMay due to back problems from standing with it. Had Martin Sousa Restored. 2013: went back to college, bought a Martin Mammoth tuba... Still have it in frankenhorn status. bought a really nice Martin Mammoth (silver one) I love it! Bought a Lee Stofer/Kanstul bell. Bought an original Martin upright bell... Not as good as the Stofer bell. Most recent tuba: Miraphibe 1291-4 BBb. Great tuba! I am always on the hunt for a new tuba experience... :tuba:

O.K. I'll give it a go...

Started in HS -- King/Cleveland sousaphone (school owned)
1st Year of College -- Used a school horn
2nd Year of college through 10 years post-college -- "Star" tuba (Meinl Weston knock off, I think)
10 years post-college --Bought Yamaha 621C & Cerveny Piggy. Sold "Star"...all through Tuba Exchange.
10 Years Later -- sold Piggy, started collecting instruments. Main go-to horn becomes HB-2.
Present -- way too many horns, but as a friend of mine, trumpet player, Dick SanFilippo once said to me: "Never sell a horn, you'll end up regretting it." I have pretty much followed his advice, but now I have to live in a tent, because there is no room in the house! : )
Here are some of the horns currently occupying my domicile:
Yamaha 621C
HB-2
Besson 983 (2002 vintage)
Alex F (pre-WWII -- great intonation!)
Rudy Meinl F
King 1241
+ sousaphones/helicons/raincatchers including: that same sousaphone that I started on in high school (I had it restored)
I find this last part ironic, since I really don't care for marching!

1993-1994: (5-6 grade) Bundy Clarinet equipped with duct tape "cork"
1995-2001: (7-12 grade) School owned King Sousaphones in varying states if decay and a Conn 5j for concert band.
2001-2006 (College!) For marching season, school owned King and Conn sousaphones in varying states of decay also played something different one year and loved it think it was a Holton? For concert band, 3+1 Besson non compensating tuba, not sure of the model, and a Conn 25J one year, also loved it.
2007-2013: (my first tuba) Besson 3/4 size Bb (eBay special) for community band and smaller ensembles. Gave it to my daughter to play 8)
2008-2013: Conn 20J (another eBay gamble) for community bands and Tubachristmas - sold to purchase
