From PA, you can easily get to Dillon's or BBC and test dozens of horns.

And why only look at new horns? Look at used horns too...a well-cared-for tuba doesn't exactly "go bad." :)

I'm a big supporter of Kalison's Daryl Smith Model. Available at the tuba exchange. Its an awesome transition CC horn. My 2cents

Yeah...but I've done some research...metal is very thin, and the valve section apparently comes off easily. Also, I've read reviews on both ends of the spectrum...but that's my 2cents, too.
I think I might end up as a grumpy old man when I get old...

Also, with the instrument, try to get your hands on an OLD Miraphone. I know they're anything but new, but I got one as my first CC horn...the one I have now, and the tone quality is wonderful. I know a professional that was going to buy it, and multiple others that would have, but they sound AMAZING.

So, open your options to a used instrument.

You're in a great price range there for a first CC....

Talk to your teacher and see what is emphatically a "no-no" in their book, then go to Dillon's and have at it.

Bring music and a friend along (a friend who can discern how you sound on a given instrument), and have a great time.

BTW...to avoid sales tax, you'll probably have to have the horn shipped to you...usually saves a good 400-500 bucks....

I'll support the Mirafone contingent - good horn, not too spendy. I would suggest trying a Monette mp. VERY spendy, but you can get one used for reasonable. I Love them - Have played them on CC BBb and F horns. Always been pleased .

Just my 2 cents...

Two guys in my community band also have a 186 each, one an older one with the 16 1/2 inch bell and S arms, and a newer one with Dubros and the 17 3/4 inch bell. They both play the Rose orchestra.
