I finished grad school without "needing" a mute, but now in the army and I don't have one to borrow anymore. I have a Besson 983 and was wondering if anyone could help me find one with which they have been successful.
Thanks!

A Paul Laurence handmade mute without a doubt. Have wick also, never use it.

Never heard of Paul Laurence mutes(google turned up an item about Paul LaWrence alto trombone mutes). Care to elaborate, Ian?
Also try www.tuba-mute.com for Shlipf mutes. Austrian, well built, good sound. Or, www.ionbalu.com for handmade wood mutes. Tried one of these at the army conference and it was nice. I've had a Humes and Berg small mute for years that has a cardboard tube in the throat. It fits, does the job and can handle abuse, but doesn't wow anybody.
