'standard' shank v. 'european' shank

Let's say you have two identical mouthpieces, but one is the 'standard' shank and one is the 'european' shank. If you insert them (one at a time) into any tuba and they both fit resonably well- no wobbling, how do you decide which one to keep? How might the difference in the shank size impact the overall playing characteristics of the tuba? I guess the difference of a 1/4" protrusion into the horn might make a differerence of 5 or 10 cents throughout the horn, but other than that, how much difference can it make?
I've always wondered about this, but never had any two mouthpieces of the same kind but different shank sizes to play back to back...
