Music Library Software

Post by dtemp »

This has been discussed on old TubeNet, but I was trying to get some new perspectives on what software (if any) people are running to keep track of their music (I'm talking sheet music here). A cross reference with recordings would be nice, but mostly I'm looking for the basics (i.e. title, composer, instrumentation, publisher, etc.) My giant file folder box with tabs bearing names the likes of "Solos A-M" and "Quintet" is just not efficient any more.

I'm a Mac user, so cross-platform or Mac-only software would be necessary.

Thanks!

MS Access (included with many of the Office packages) is a fantastic, and pretty easy to use, database.

As noted by my OS choice, I try to stay away from Microsoft products as much as possible. If that is the only option though, so be it.

Pyware sells one to school band directors. Portions of it could be used for managing concert band music. For my purposes, it's a heck of a whole lot easier to just set up a database with Excel or Access. My favorite is Access as it's much more flexible.

If you don't have Excel for your Mac, Appleworks has a spreadsheet component. (Not as good as Excel, but sufficient for your purposes.) Didn't it come with your Mac?

Filemaker Pro comes PC flavored, too.

I have a $600 program for musicians and bands called Charms. However, any basic spreadsheet or database works fine.... this is not high end computing we're talking about. My personal preference is MS Works database. Its easy to use and can open and save all kinds of files.
