Second the "beautiful mute" phrase.
The comments I'm getting are that it's not as "muted" a sound as most people are used to. Certainly, the Apperson gets a lot more bite.
As for intonation and response, there's almost no issue with Ion's mutes. The sound may may not be what you are used to so try and play one first.
