Lucky for me, my wind ensemble is going to Ann Arbor, Michigan this weekend for a CBDNA conference and while I'm out there, I've managed arrange lessons with Fritz Kaenzig and Phil Sinder. (Ahhh, I'm so excited to meet them!!!) Since I've never been to those schools, and the fact that I'll be tight on time with the wind ensemble rehearsals & performances, I'm a bit nervous about the whole arrangement. So... I have are few questions for those of you who are familiar with the area and the schools.

Anybody know how long it takes to get from Ann Arbor to East Lancing? (Mapquest said about an hour but I don't always trust mapquest). Is I-96 a heavy traffic high way? How is the practice room situation at U of M and Michigan State? Can I just go into any practice room to warm up or is there a sign up system of some sort?

Yeah, I know these are silly questions. I just want to make sure everything goes smoothy so that I can concentrate on playing and not make an *** out of myself. Any help or advice you can give me would be appreciated.

Hi,

I went to U of M for undergraduate studies and am currently finishing a DMA at MSU. I would say it takes more like an hour and 15 minutes to get from one music building to the other if everything goes smoothly. You can count on going full speed the whole way on I-96 most of the time. At MSU, you can use any practice room (there are some in the Music Building and the Music Practice Building -- the two buildings are connected by an underground tunnel). Recently when I went to U of M there were signs saying that only U of M students can use the practice rooms, but the rooms weren't locked. I was able to spend 15 minutes warming up without getting in trouble.

P.S. There's some road work being done on 23 North which could slow you down on the drive from Ann Arbor to East Lansing. It goes down to one lane for a short while.
