Anyone out there use to own either of these? I'm looking for a small CC for quintet, and would like some feedback if it's available. I already called there, but want to know more.

In addition to the 184, an underrated horn for quintet is a Conn 2J. There is one for sale in the for sale section of the forum.

I did see that as well, but I think I want something with 5 valves.

Can/should I assume that the older ones have S style linkages? Looking at the pics, one has S linkage and the other doesn't.

I noticed that too. I does not have the extra length in the leadpipe like a BBb, but that tube down to the tuning slide is a stumper. Did they build CC's like that at one time? Could this have been a fix to lower the overall pitch?

I have also noticed lately that there are advertised (used) Miraphones with numbers that indicate they are newer than one I used to own (#10307 - 184 CC) that have "S" style linkage. Mine, which I believe was made in 1976, had those white connectors. I was always under the assumption that the "S" style was done away with after they went to the white connectors. Was the "S" and option for late '70's or '80's horns?

The 184 I owned was a fantastic instrument. I wish I still had it. And those white connectors took a pounding and kept on working.

Mine, #9136, also came with those white connectors, which are still on it. And I was fortunate enough to be dumb lucky enough to have kept mine- and now I couldn't do without it!

I've noticed the plumbing difference before, but just in magazine advertisements.

I've seen ads for sale on Ebay with a young Roger Bobo that was pictured with a 184. The ad said CC, but it had the BBb-looking tubing between the 4th valve tubing and main tuning slide. Looking at ebay, I haven't been able to find a copy of the ad.

There is also an old ad with Toby Hanks pictured with a 184 CC that has the same plumbing.




The old 185 CC that Baltimore Brass had recently sure sold fast!

Mine also has the S arms and plastic (nylon or teflon?) washers/bushings, although the recording bell is Mirafone. Two are missing and others are deteriorating. But overall the action is in great shape, and I actually prefer the aesthetics of the S arms. So instead of trashing perfectly good linkage for Dubros, Dan Schultz is sending me a set of replacements. They're not cheap, but then again, the first set lasted thirty-five years. At that rate, I'll let my son worry about replacing the next set!

Mine has no loop, but to play A440 the tuning slide is WAY out, so that makes sense to me!
