In the start-up phase of a Brass 5tet.

Those of you that do this type of gig, how do you charge? By the gig, by the hour? How much? What's the going rate?

Any other advice?

Charging for quintet

I suspect there are regional economic forces to factor in, but in the Cincinnati area we are getting $125 per player fairly reliably these days. Some gigs are still stuck at $100 per, but fewer each year.

Be sure you know what is expected. Suppose in a graduation ceremony, they want something like the Mouret Rondeau about a thousand times nonstop for their processional. Charge extra for that or you will lose your trumpet players forever. Suppose it's a wedding. Do they want a special arrangement of the duet from Bizet's "The Pearl Fishers?" Do they want a singer? Don't be shy about upping your quote. Better not to get the gig, in the long run, than wind up in the hole thanks to a crappy squeezebox arrangement or a bargain-countertenor.

Oh, and if you get boxed in on Mouret? Bite the bullet and transpose it down a chunk, then keep it in your book, just in case.

Base rate is $750/hr or for a standard wedding (usu. about 1:15) Extra mileage, numbers etc. is an add-on based on the specifics.

...+ 20% extra for whomever contracted the gig (the bandleader, so to speak.)
