I need to ship a Miraphone 186 CC to Washington state. Where are some places I can look for a box to ship it in? It will not be in a gig bag or a case. I already have the packing materials to place around the horn. Thanks!

Already tried. The have a bunch of smaller boxes, but they don't usually keep the bigger ones.

And when you do pack it, use a combination of those "air pillows" and traditional peanuts for packing, AFTER you tape the receiver and bell shut!

I second the suggestion to buy from U-Haul. Also, double-box if you can, even if it means making a second, outside container from a mirror pack or other source of cardboard. Put an inflatable rubber ball in the bell to distribute forces from dropping the box.

When I flew to Vietnam from Los Angeles in October, I took one of my tubas that didn't have a case onto the plane as checked baggage. I used an airconditioner box. Then I wrapped a bed comforter around the tuba. Since it was held together with packaging tape, I wasn't sure it would still be in one piece when I got to Saigon. It wasn't crushed in any way--United Airlines gave me about ten FRAGILE stickers to stick all over the box.

Then, when I got out of the airport and took a taxi home, the cab driver refused to put the box in his trunk and tried to put it in the front seat on the passenger's side. He squashed the box to make it fit through the car door!

definitely plug up the bell when shipping like that, thats how my gronitz came and I was pulling peanuts out for weeks!
