In my opinion, there are three alternatives in order beginning with 'the best'....

1) The Meinl-Weston tuba harness (most expensive... about $80). Bought mine from Woodwind/Brasswind. Your tuba is 'hands free'.

2) The 'Blue Note' tuba strap (has provisions to attach to your horn is it doesn't have harness loops). Available from The Tuba Exchange... about $20.

3) Rifle sling from WalMart.

I noted Dan's similar advice in a past post--Thanks Dan--and I bought a nice, padded leather shotgun sling from Dick's Sporting Goods.

I removed the leather/buckle-based adjustment attachments from the shotgun sling.

The best way to attach the shotgun sling to my horn's two strap rings (without danger of scratching the horn) was two thin, nylon-backed strips of double-sided Velcro, one for each ring. Velcro strips come in black from hardware stores and colors from Eddie Bauer.

I seldom play standing, so I went (CHEAP) with a military suplus rifle strap- covered the metal snaps with plastic tubing. If it's for less than 10 minutes I can just hold the horn, a York Monster Eb.
