Joe Novotny is one of the finest musicians on ANY instrument. I encourage all of you to get the Bernstein Young Peoples Concerts on DVD. Every time he plays, he is present, but in a way that doesn't slam the tuba in your face. His "Sensemaya" is astounding, as well as Shosty 9.

While I am not dismissing Wades knowledge or recollections, it was my understanding that Mr. Novoty played on a "Bell" King and then the Bell Model Meinl (4 Valves) his whole career. Unfortunately, Don Harry, Patsy Landolfi, Kevin Ladd, Ray Becker, and others don't post here, so we are out of first hand info.

If you are not fimiliar with Mr. Novotny's playing, start with the Mahler 6 with Bernstein. Astounding all around. He is a quiet man with no pretensions.

I think the thing about Joe Novotny was that he was so low key. He didn't seem like the tuba celebrity he was--he was just an ordinary guy. When Leonard Bernstein was the conductor of the NY Phil, he was a major factor in the orchestra's greatness.

Hi-
Also check out his playing on the Bernstein NYPO Prokofiev 5 and Gershwin An American in Paris--simply the best!
BTW, Mike Lynch has his CC King tuba which is just amazing--incredible sound.

I wonder whose tuba Mike Lynch doesn't have. Oh, wait! I know one. (just kidding, Mike)
