Joe Novotny is one of the finest musicians on ANY instrument. I encourage all of you to get the Bernstein Young Peoples Concerts on DVD. Every time he plays, he is present, but in a way that doesn't slam the tuba in your face. His "Sensemaya" is astounding, as well as Shosty 9.
While I am not dismissing Wades knowledge or recollections, it was my understanding that Mr. Novoty played on a "Bell" King and then the Bell Model Meinl (4 Valves) his whole career. Unfortunately, Don Harry, Patsy Landolfi, Kevin Ladd, Ray Becker, and others don't post here, so we are out of first hand info.
If you are not fimiliar with Mr. Novotny's playing, start with the Mahler 6 with Bernstein. Astounding all around. He is a quiet man with no pretensions.
