The dreaded mute

Post by Adam C. »

What tuba mutes do you like?

I'm afraid I have to buy one very soon. Anyone remember which ones Dillon carry in stock?

This is gonna sound crazy, but it's true.

I've just finished a 3-weekend tour, sitting next to John Manning (Atlantic Brass Quintet, formerly teacher at UMass Amherst, starting at U. of Iowa), playing a pretty heavy summer orchestral program. He didn't have room to bring a mute for the passages from Stravinsky's Firebird, so he bought a big metal dogfood dish for $3.99 and simply used that, holding it above the bell a little bit.

It sounded GREAT.

Better than any tuba mute I've ever heard.

He had to experiment a little to find where to hold it for intonation (which varied a little for different regiosters of the horn), but it sounded fantastic, metallic like a good metal trombone mute...just great.

what a great idea

i think that is a great idea. I am going to the store right away. The metallic buzz of a trombone or trumpet mute is what i have always wanted in a piece such as firebird, but cant seem to get on a regular "made for tuba mute". Thanks Gabe, see you around Boston sometime.
