Joe,

I really can't fathom your contempt for the cimbasso. You, as an F tuba player (primarily), should be able to appreciate more than most the quality of blend you get in a section with a cimbasso rather than a tuba. In some ways, cimbasso playing is quite similar to bass tuba playing. I haven't seen anyone (who actually knows about cimbassos and has played them and really worked with them) suggest that we should pitch our tubas and play everything on the cimbasso. Really and truly, the instrument has its specific uses and when properly applied, it makes a stunning and wonderful contribution to the music. Just like any good instrument.

I hope we can all leave room in our community for differing opinions about the merits of types and styles of playing. Excluding legitimate performance practice or denigrating those who believe differently seems counter to all the tuba & euphonium community has embodied during my lifetime. I sincerely hope we haven't lost that inclusive capacity.

My opinion for what it's worth...
