Did somebody say...LINUX?
I just recently installed Slackware 10 with KDE on my laptop and my wife's laptop (both 5+ year old machines) It has been the by far the best distro I have EVER used!! Even on OLD hardware, it runs GREAT...even with KDE.
Ok...back on topic. Have you checked out "Noteedit"? It reminds me of Finale PrintMusic. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a native printing format. You must export the files to a music type face like lilypond, ABC, MusixTex, etc.
Check out the Noteedit homepage...

The author recently rolled the site back to show version 2.6.2. Last week he had 2.6.4. Perhaps there were too many errors with 2.6.4. Just a guess.
I've seen Rosegarden and have been quite intrigued. It looks like Rosegarden is very powerful and can do midi sequencing as well as notation.
One last idea:
Is you like running Gnome or some other GTK UI (XFCE, etc) you might like "Gscore." It is still VERY new, but it looks promising. Check out

I hope this helps!
