What's the cheapest (while still safe) way to ship a tuba from Europe?

I have never done it, but maybe buy a seat and ship inside the plane? You can get some super deals every now and then on rates.

BAX Global seems to be the popular choice for shipping tubas.

Air freight cost me a few hundred - more than 500 euro - and some time driving to the airport and dealing with the shipper (Schenker). The shipper put the helicon in a sturdy cardboard box with a slanted top, and strapped it to a pallet. Nothing is for sure - I mean, what happens if the plane goes down in the Atlantic? - but this is pretty good. The not-entirely-rectangular box shape may have some desireable structural property, but it may also insure that no one puts anything on top of the box (because it will slide off.) I was required to get US Customs to sign off, but that was easy, and the freight dock guys were also easy.

The other helicon was shipped via Deutsche Post "economy", in a large cardboard box made of two cardboard boxes taped together, with random chunks of rigid foam and wadded up in polyethylene and tape. This was of course slower, and risky, but cost a lot less - I forget, US $100?

Has anyone investigated LCL oceanic shipping (Less than Container Load). You get a large box, about 20 of which fit in a standard container and the first 1000 Kg. is part of the base fee of about $150.

Very slow (months), but maybe an option?
