Gentlemen; MA (and the other ladies)

I have hit that time that many an old war horse does, and I am joining the ranks of the USMC retired list.
While that in and of its self has nothing to do with music the following does.

My son is opening a new chapter in his musical life. And of course you can't open one chapter without closing another.

I have to thank the many who weighed in on questions I had on developing his musical skills. Particularly those dealing with him taking private lessons. In particular, I have to thank Tom Holtz for putting us in contact with Mark Thiele. Mark has been Michaels' tutor for nearly 18 months.
I was "concerned" during those first few lessons, listening to Mark compliment the squeaks and obvious misplaced sharps and flats. In fact, I was thinking that if there weren't some corrections and improvements forthcoming I'd consider looking for an new instructor.
My fears were misplaced. Mark was a great teacher. Much more in tune (haha) than I would have been on motivating a new student.
Michaels' improvent has been considerable, and the experience of playing with a member of The Presidents' Own is somthing that he will never forget nor fail to appreciate.
Mark invited us to many musical events. I wished we had made more time to attend more of them. But those we attended were fantastic.
I've tacked on a couple of photos...

Next month we are moving to the Cincinnati Ohio area. He will become a member of the Milford Eagle Marching Band. His presence will bring them up to 8 sousaphones and put them over 160 members with guard, pits, and drum majors.
Should be a fun year.

Yep, sure is.
This year he won the schools 17th straight VBODA superior rateing.
Only 3 schools have a better record, and one of those is his fathers' school in Chantilly.

I went to school with Joe at Virginia Tech (I was a couple years ahead of him). He was, without a doubt, the hardest working music education major there. He was thorough and dedicated in everything he did. He was also a pretty dang good percussionist himself! I'm sure you realize what a gem of a band director you all have there.

Congrats to you and your son!!

Milford eh? Clermont County Marching bands don't have a great reputation except for probably them. Have him do both the Land of Grant Honor band and OMEA district XIV band. Once upon a time I was a member of both. Unfortunately in Ohio they dont have state champions in Marching Band. You only go for a rating.

My sister and her family live in Beavercreek Oh. I asked them about bands after I narrowed down living areas by quality of high schools in the area. They said their kids hated it when they found out Milford would be attending the same competitions they would.

I actually live in Northern Kentucky and am not afraid to say that the bands here are better.
