A used miraohne 1291 would be in your price range. ita a great all around horn. or you could get a daylan 2001 new, but you might regret that. I strongly suggest checking out the used market and playing anything you can, so you can make an educated purchase.

The German tubists seem to favor BBb and F .... fwiw.

Dr.,
I must know .... how would YOU describe the response of the dreaded low C on the Firebird. (I have somewhere posted my impression when I played one at WWBW a year or so ago.)
While your at it -- any / all impressions and observations are eagerly awaited.
Danke schoen,

Hmmm -- in response to an earlier post? Or enjoying a little bit of daily solid geometry?

If the low C on your Firebird is like the low F on my 1291 BBb then it is indeed a joy to play that note. I haven't played the Firebird, but I suspect it is analgous in its "effish" way to the the 1291 as far as ease of blowing and response in the low register. From your description it appears that the upper end of these 2 models are also similar - I can play in the treble clef with the same ease and clarity that I used to do with my Eb's (Besson and Yamaha - both of which were very nice bass tubas.) I think Miraphone has really improved their line of horns. If I were still interested in a bass tuba I would have to get the Norwegian Star, but my quintet and solo days are alas behind me.

Smart man.
Bill, see you next month. Please remember to set some time aside so we can play every stinking horn on display. Then drink. Then bash on Holtz for being a nerd.

Nerd? Ya think...?
??

Pardon me while I wipe the gin off my screen (that shot out of my nose). WOO HOO, I now have new wallpaper. BTW, this replaces a beautiful picture of Tom swimming with a dolphin as my early morning wake up.
That trumpet player on the bottom left looks a little fishy.
