I got to record in a real studio for the first time about two months ago. It was with my high school jazz band, which was recording at the Chicago Recording Company. The band had recorded at either CRC of Hinge for about 25 years prior to my stint with the group and my director decided to take the band back after three failed attempts at student recording, (that's a whole 'nother story in itself.) Due to the diminished hearing in my left ear, I would only use one earphone at a time. I was in the brass room, which was most of what I had to hear to play along. Both me, (as bass trombone,) and the bari sax were turned up loud in the playback mix to help out the band, so it worked out well. I had a lot of fun, especially since the re-recording process after each song almost never involved me. Free food and drink, comfortable leather sofas and chairs, and a couple of big screen tvs helped occupy the time in between takes. All in all, a great experience. Plus, it was fun hearing the engineer talk about all of the famous singers who can't sing in tune!, (R.Kelly and Cher are two of the ones he listed.) Just goes to show you what ProTools can do!

I have a story from that trip, which involved someone accidentally saying out loud the name of a certain body part on one of the tracks. I'll leave you to ponder what that could be.....

I tripped over a cable, knocked my bass trombone off its stand, and bent the slide. Everyone had to wait an hour while I went across town to the university and borrowed a Bach 50.
The good news is that I went to the Slide Dr. the next day, at his house in the-middle-of-nowhere, Georgia; and the slide was made much better than factory.
