Adult Music Camp

I just returned from Ashland, Ohio where I spent four days at Ashland University in a adult music camp. There were 71 musicians... four of which played tuba. I thought there was a very good balance. All that being said... I asked the director how he would feel if twenty tuba players showed up next year... all with sousaphones. He responded with "I suppose that would be OK. After all, this IS a community band". Think about it guys

Last year's Summer Arts Festival here in Fairbanks featured 4 tubas in a wind ensemble of 35. That number included 5 percussionists. All the tubas were BBb's, though I was the odd man out with the top valve Yammy.

I'd like to know whether anyone has attended any of the New Horizons band camps that are sponsored every year by that organization. I almost attended the 1 week camp held in Las Cruces, NM, a few weeks ago (two close friends of mine just moved down there) but could not swing it due to a case I have pending.

I think there are other camps scheduled in Iowa, New York, and a couple of other places. There's shorter program scheduled up in Door County, WI sometime around Labor Day. From what I've read, some of these camps offer different tracks for old fart newbies (never played before), old fart re-treads (starting again 30 years after high school), and "old crow pros (some very decent players). They have sectionals and quintets/quartets as well. They sound interesting.

BTW: NH Bands do not discriminate based on age. Our band (DePaul U) has a few younger (under 40) types. Heck . . . we even scrounged up Bob1062.
