IN TUNE
Beyond that, I think most of us care about as much as most trumpet players care if we have a goldbrass F tuba or a sliverplated CC.

I like instruments and players with dynamic control also. Beyond that, it depends on the music.

Any thoughts?

There was a "Mr. Bean" Christmas episode with a Salvation Army QUARTET playing on a street corner (whilst a street urchin / pickpocket was working the crowd -- nabbed by our hero, Mr. Bean). IIRC they had a cornet, Eb horn, Baritone and tuba. The sound of this group was lovely -- with the deeper, warmer sound you'd expect with this instrumentation.
Of course, it all depends on the pieces of music being played. Didn't Roger Bobo use a bass trumpet in F for some stuff, to get the "right sound"?
I'd like to hear: 1 cornet, 1 flugel, 1 baritone covering the horn part, 1 euph, 1 large Eb tuba -- just because.
Of course you could go the "other way" and choose:
1 pic, 1 Eb trumpet, 1 Eb alto horn, 1 trombone, 1 euph for the bass voice ....

Woohoo!!!
Thanks, "E" !!!
(Whadda think -- 1 flugel, 1 Eb alto, 1 euph, 1 Eb ??) Can't tell for sure, but it's either a shepherd's crook cornet or a flugel. Don't know my Besson horns well enough to be 100% certain of the others. (I **DO** know the difference between a 186 and a 641 BBb, however ...

)

My preference would be for a tenor horn (alto) over an alto sax, but as the respondents have indicated, anything that plays in tune without vibrato (and saxes have always struck me as being like sopranos; the wider the vibrato, the better your chances are of hitting the mark
somewhere in there... )
