Does anyone know what the status of the catalog Golden Crest? When I was poking around I found something on a bass player site that said that Gunther Schuller owned it.

Is there any legal way to get some of the old tuba recordings or even to find a list of what this label had?

I'm listening to a recital series Harvey Phillips record and would really like to hear more of these, any ideas.

FYI the record that I'm checking out is RE 7006 with the Wilder Sonata, Air and Bouree, Handel - Andante, Corelli - Gigue, O Isis and Osiris and 2 moods for tuba by Donald Swann.

Thanks,
Bill

I also got the information you had re:Gunther Schuller owning the rights....However I have checked more and found that this catalog is essentially unobtainium. There appears to be no permanent library or any place to go to find out more re: re-issues or reprints.

In addition to the Harvey Phillips (RE7006) record, I also have the three Leonard Falcone records (RE7001, RE7016, RE7036), the Bill Bell record (CR3015), and a recording of "The Music of Karl King" played by the Univ. of Illinois Band (CRS 4096).

P.S. I bought a "vinyl to USB" turntable so that I can re-record my old records and archive them as MP3's.

I used to have an old catalogue of all of their recordings and as I remember there were a lot of university ensembles and special events, (convention and clinic/contest concerts, etc.) along with soloists. They were still pressing records up until the mid' '80s when I bought several albums new. I hope that their masters are still preserved because they had a very extensive catalogue of this material.

It is my understanding that the Golden Crest catalog is currently in the hands of Clark Galehouse's family. (Galehouse is the founder of Golden Crest, Silver Crest, and Crest Records). I know that Harvey Phillips has been working with Mr. Galehouse's son-in-law G.R. Davis on the upcoming Bill Bell and His Tuba CD. Fortunately-- I have some of Crest Records final printed catalogs before going out of business. I am currently working on a website for my publishing company and hope to make some of those catalogs available in the form of pdf files.
