I really liked the Yamaha Jim Self autograph with my 621. I played the horn for 4 months with several PT's, 20,64,65,88; a Schilke 67 & Helleberg, Conn Helleberg and a Miraphone TU-17. I liked the Jim Self so much that when I sold the horn I kept it for my Miraphone 184. I will occaisionally try one of the others but always come back to the Jim Self.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

Try another Yamaha?
I have used Yamaha 25 on similar sized tubas with good results. The 67C4 Yamaha, as far as I can tell is too small to be worth spending much time with but the 65 seems to me to be about the right size for this horn. The fellow who suggested the G-W Matanuska also had a good idea if you want to ask to try one. I have used all of these and they all have their virtues except for the 67C4 which, for whatever corporate reason, is the one they send out with their tubas.
Always make a good sound; audiences will forget if you miss a note but making a good sound will get you the next job.

I also wound up with a 30E as a contra mp. Only I don't use it in a contra. When I am playing the bottom(contra) parts in trombone choir the only way I am able to get enough facility is with a stock 30E that I turned the shank down on to fit my Besson bass trombone. Works amazing well.Subwoofer wrote:Hey Bob,Bob1062 wrote:How's the big boy working out for you?

I love those things!
I tried both the 60 and 62 for awhile. Then a custom Schilke 62 from Hammond (when he was still with Schilke). Didn't like any of them. I finally found the Golden Fleece, a Bach 30E. It really rocks with the Miraphone.
