Hi Tubenet,


Does anyone know where I could buy/test a 4/4 Nirschl tuba. I know that there is a horn for sale right now that is a Nirschl, but I talked to the seller and it is sold (pending funds). my last question is if anyone knows how the horn measures up to a 1291 in size, project, and tone.

i may be WAY OFF but i think custom had one or two in stock. just give them a call. have you played one? make sure your comfortable with how you have to hold the horn. i think it plays well but the receiver is off to the side so have to hold the horn damn near sideways to play it. then again, you could always buy it and then re-configure the leadpipe :)

Mine's just a production model. The handmade version I played extensively at Midwest was different than mine. Not better, not worse; I could have learned to love it. It weighed a bit less... It cost a lot more.

The leadpipe angle is perfect. Don't change a thing. Hold the horn correctly and you will be a happy owner.

Jason Wallace (my co-conspirator in the DWS) has a 7 year old Nirschl and it's also great horn. The playbacks from the recording session last week (organ and band album) were spectacular for tuba. I'm afraid the engineer will have to roll us back for publication but he loved pushing the monitors with Jason's pedal register (which you could still hear even with the organ CRANKED).

Strauss, Walton, Daughtery, Grainger all had tuba parts. Hindemith, Gabrieli and something else did not.

I contacted Custom music. They do have two in stock (thanks Casey). The cost is 10,500. Around the price of a pt-6.

You would likely do well with Custom Music....Jeff is a terrific individual to deal with. I played the instrument they had at TBA....it was fantastic also. I bet you could negotiate something better than 10500. Maybe not much but every little bit helps. Also something else to consider: Gemstone music sponsored Alex C. and I at our performance at Midwest last December. Alex got the handmade version while I got the production horn. I have to agree with Alex, the handmade was different but not necessarily better or worse. Alex still sounded amazing! The production horn I played was a bit different than my own but was still a very, VERY good instrument. If you can't make it work with Custom, you should give Gemstone a call too, I think they may have a production horn too.
