OK folks, I'm just a lowly hamateur here, and don't know all that much, but there seems to be a whole lotta fussin" about these Nirschl tubas and all their mutations.

is this just tuba du jour or am I really missing something??

But, often horns with an ACTUAL good reputation tend to play well...not always, but often.

But actual reputation, I mean one from real people...not posted on the sellers sites...lol

Plus, horns play different with differnet people anyways, so who REALLY knows.

Well I love mine. I've had offers to sell/trade and I've considered it. However, I just can't find anything better for under 15k. It's a biggish 4/4 and is wonderfully efficient. The dynamic range and clarity on this horn is great. I've thought about getting a bigger horn but I'm having no issues with the horn sounding 'too small' in any hall or ensemble I've played in yet.

It's about time MY horn became the tuba de jour!

I've only seen a few Nirchls for sale in the last few years. I haven't seen any that are the same model as mine. Maybe, like me, people are recognizing what it is they have.

If any of you are ever in the Toronto area, I'd be happy to let you give it a blow.

I own a Marzan BBb (B & M/Nirschl/York copy) and a big York Eb (20" bell).... and I have limited experience with the Nirschl 4/4's. There's just something about these horns that makes them feel a bit exceptional. I think it's a case where the tapers are sort of 'just right'. I don't think the intonation of these horns is much better than loads of other tubas, but there's really something to be said about the efficiency of these horns. My Marzan feels 'alive' but alternate fingerings have to be used for the 'G' and 'D'. Alex owners crow about their horns being so great... but i've found the same to be true with them. They are great feeling horns but you need to know 'Alex fingerings' to play an Alex. Intonation-wise, my old Mirafone 186 beats 'em all hands down.

I've tried a bunch of the 6/4 Nirschl's and while they are not all the same they are all fantastic horns with a great sound and amazing agility.

well i've played on the york copy and the 4/4 and i must say these horns are very impressive. i will say though that the configuration of parts, the leadpipe for instance, makes it slightly uncomfortable (FOR ME) to play. you have to turn the horn sideways to play it. maybe i'll find a used one and take the saved cash to change the position on the leadpipe.
