My experience:

DHL ground.
Reason: because they offer residential pick-up.
Cost: About $100 Chicago to Kansas.
Result: Tuba in hard case (MTS) picked up about 11:00AM and delivered to a shop in Kansas less than 48 hours later with no damage.

I've received tubas via FedEx, Greyhound, and UPS with no problems.

There are at least 100 threads on this topic here. Do a search on "shipping," "FedEx," "UPS," "Greyhound," and "Amtrak." to hear a variety of shipping stories - some of them ain't purty.
