I have used Super Glue Gel on mine once.

Back in the 'good old days' those pearls were swaged into the fingerbuttons and you had to use a shrinking die to peen over a rim around the perimeter of the finger button. These days, I think 'Super-Glue' is pretty standard for the industry.

Three of my 4 pearls fell off my new 2141 within 3 months. Used Gorilla Glue to put them back on. Still holding after almost 2 years.

Included with the new horn was a little bag with valve oil, slide grease, etc.
Perhaps Meinl-Weston should have included a small botle of Gorilla Glue!!

:) :) :)

I hade the pearl fall off of my MW as well and reapplied it with simple super glue.

Sounds like MW needs to figure out a better way to make those stay in place.

Puh-leese on the psychobabble. But there are two grains of truth here: 1) the Gorilla glue may not be durable over the long haul, and 2) Superglue, because of the cyanide fumes it gives off when heated, should probably be avoided.

If you can't find a guy to swage them in properly in the grand tradition, epoxy is probably the alternate solution.

The "foaming" expansion of Gorilla glue clearly leads to a dampening effect on the upper partials. On the other brittle glues, such as a super glue, should be used cautionsly in conjunction with sliver plated finish horns to avoid overaccentuating the brightness already commonly known to be caused by such a finish. A five minute epoxy or liquid nails are both "close to neutral" choices while one of the longer setting time epoxies will impart a warmer tone- especially if intermixed with precious metal filings.

I'm sure glad I read the posts on TubeNet. Just think how bad the quality of my tuba life would be if I didn't have this important information.

Heck- I'm typing the swill and you're not only actually reading it but commenting on it. Hardly an auspicious indicator of QOL for either of us......[/quote]
I guess I have to concede on that point.

half of my fleet are missing at least one pearl. I think I would use either super glue or 2 part epoxy.

People in the "know" are using helium-filled finger-button tops, so that not only are they non-dampening, they are lighter than dampening!

I'm having some difficulty dealing with some of the pearls of wisdom being offered in this thread. Things don't usually get quite so serious here on TubeNet.

I know this thread has veered off-track some, but this thread on Super-Glue is worth checking out.
