I owned an old Tommy Johnson 188CC (shoulda never let it go) that i set up to move just the 1st slide only. I played D 1-3 and Db 1-2-3. For whatever reason, The most I needed to pull that slide out was about 2-1/2 inches. I could play low F 1-4 and pull about three inches, but 5-2-3 was on the screws and was wicked loud (old 2-3 combo 5th).

IMO, Miraphone has done a good job listening to its customers. Almost too good. I prefered the older horns with the 5-2-3 5th and the slide kicker on the 1st valve is just nonsense.

Miraphone also tends to set up the slide from the factory at about the best alignment I have seen in any horn. A little (very little) lapping with something as light as toothpaste can get the slide to almost trombone like speed with some light oil/slide grease combo that I make up (usually al cass and the selmer red goo).

If one wants to put any kicker on a horn, just put it on the main slide. This way you can fix everything with one movement.
