Philip Donatelli was the tubist of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1923 to 1948 and the tuba instructor at the Curtis Institute from 1928-42. He was born in 1885, and later began playing the tuba in his hometown of Roseto, Italy. He played in several bands in Europe before coming to the United States at the age of twenty. Before his appointment to the Philadelphia Orchestra, he played in many famous American bands including Pryor’s, Conway’s and Vesella’s. He died in Ardmore Park, Pennsylvania, on April 5, 1954.
