I had an interesting day while on tour with the BSO in Berlin this past week and I thought the story might be of interest. The photographer traveling with the BSO, Michael Lutch got a great shot in front of the Brandenburg Gate.
My hats off to Alexander von Puttkamer for saving the day.

Great story Mike. That happened to me in a different kind of way in the same hall in 1999 on tour with Osmo Vanska.
The truck that the instruments were travelling in had a major malfunction with its air conditioning system and the instruments were duly frozen on arrival ! At the seating call, my tuba was like a huge block of ice ! Fortunately for me, I was only in the 2nd half and things had started to thaw by then, which was just as well as we were playing Petrushka that night !! Some of the other guys had to borrow instruments but the show passed off OK I think !
Heard the London prom the other night - sounded great !
Levine took some fairly brisk speeds in the Berlioz didn't he ?!!
I thought the BSO sounded very polished throughout.
I hope someone took you out for a few warm English beers afterwards !!

so sorry, you could have had one from me without having to transpose. i own 3 c-tubas (because i'm americian) - and i was hanging out at the phil all day with doug and the ophicleide guys with a c-tuba tuba in the car!

If you had to play BBb, just think if you got a sousaphone.

I mean that with all due respect to BBb players. Whatever works, baby. Whatever works! I not trying to start a BBb vs. CC vs. F vs. Gb war here.

I play CC but can ONLY play jazz and dixie on a BBb sousaphone (or on bass guitar). The groove is just not there on anything else. Dang, I am just diggin the hole deeper.

Just would have been a great image of some fugly old unlaquered sousaphone honkin' onstage at an orchestra concert. I'd buy that for a dollar.

Mike, I would bet all the money I have (about $7.29) that the concert was incredible on the BBb and would have been incredible if you played it on a funnel and a plastic tube pitched in Ab.

Hope the horns are OK and the rest of the tour goes well. See you back in the states.
