Can someone explain to me how you get from a normal F major scale to an
inverted F chromatic hypophrygian scale? All I can help you with is that hypophrygian is greek for the mixolydian mode. I'll be surprised if anyone knows this.

I guess I wasn't really clear about my question... Can you define what an inverted F chromatic hypophrygian scale is? What does the hypo mean? and the chromatic part? and the inversion?

Take DeCamp or Greyhound bus to the Port Authority. Keep going down the escalators until you can't go down any further. Walk several blocks underground to the Time Square station. Look straight ahead and don't talk to anybody. Take the Number 1 uptown to the 125th Street Station. Go down the stairs and walk three blocks downtown. Make a right and go in the building with the canopy over the doorway.

Okay, I'll get this one over, in a hurry.
It's all Greek to me.
It appears to e a Pentatonic scale with two notes a semi-tone raised. Leave out the two marked naturals and you have a Pentatonic scale, as my Native American Flute has.
But Why? We did not need Europeans, before, to discuss our music; why do we need them now?

Timothy Leary's dead.
No, no, no, no, he's outside looking in.
Timothy Leary's dead.
No, no, no, no, he's outside looking in.
He'll fly his astral plane,
Takes you trips around the bay,
Bring you back the same day,
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.
Timothy Leary's dead.

Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.
Along the coast you'll hear them boast
About a light they say that shines so clear.
So raise your glass, well drink a toast
To the little man who sells you thrills along the pier.
Hell take you up, hell bring you down,
Hell plant your feet back firmly on the ground.
He flies so high, he swoops so low,
He knows exactly which way he's gonna go.
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.
He'll take you up, he'll bring you down,
He'll plant your feet back on the ground.
Hel'l fly so high, he'll swoop so low.
Timothy Leary.
He'll fly his astral plane.

He'll bring you back the same day.

Very good question.

Better yet, take the 1 train to 157th street. Walk one block downtown. East side of the street: New Caporal - Best fried chicken
ever.

I know...my girlfriend did her Master's across the street, so I am familiar with the area.
I was gonna give you bonus points for correctlyputting the 125th and Broadway station ABOVE GROUND (which is quite rare in Manhattan).
more questions...

Thank you! That was just the answer I was looking for!
There's just a couple things I don't understand...
FightClub201 wrote:The chromatic alteration results in two groups of two consecutive half steps.
B Cx Dx Ex F# Gx Ax B
How does one chromatically alter a scale? And also, you posted B Cx Dx
Ex F# Gx
Ax B. Aren't Ex and F# the same note? same for Ax and B?
FightClub201 wrote:This pattern of A2 W H H A2 H H is the pattern of the Chromatic Hypophrygian scale. The inverse is inverse of this pattern: H H A2 H H W A2
This one makes me feel stupid: what does A2 represent?
Thank you (and everybody elce who responded) so much!
TubeNet's awesome!

FightClub201 wrote:For a "chromatic major scale", think of it this way:
The defining charecteristics of a major scale are the major third, and the perfect fifth
C d E f G a b C
So we will leave those intact
C E G
Major scales are also charecterized by the leading tone (B to C) which we will leave intact. C E G B
Now if we want to create a feeling of chromaticism and still leave those pitches intact, or best option is to lower D (creating a B C Db series of half steps). This is easy with the natural half step B to C. and raise F and lower A (giving F# G Ab series). Why not raise D and raise A to have groups of A# B C and D# E F with G alone? Db and B naturaly resolve to C, and F# and Ab naturally resolve to G. This is much nicer harmonically.
The C chromatic Major (Ionian) scale:
C Db E F# G Ab B C
Uhh... this doesn't seem to work for this scale though...
I really can't see how the method you described gets you from
C hypophrygian
B C D E F G A B
to
C chromatic hypophrygian
B Cx Dx E# F# Gx A# B
also, here's what I gathered so far:
C major [do - do]
C D E F G A B C
C phrygian [mi - mi]
E F G A B C D E
C hypophrygian [Hypo is a term left over from the church modes meaning that the ambitus (range) of the scale is from a 4th below the finalis (tonic) to a 5th above.]
B C D E F G A B
C chromatic hypophrygian [who knows?]
B Cx Dx E# F# Gx A# B
C inverted chromatic hypophrygian [reverse the order of the scale pattern]
B C Db E F Gb Ab B
F inverted chromatic hypophrygian [transpose the scale to F]
E F Gb A B Cb Db E
