Bob,

Michael Mulcahey is in the utility chair, so, in addition to playing euphonium on Planets, Mahler 7, and so on, plays bass trombone when Charlie Vernon is off, and also does alto work / 1st part on Brahms' symphonies, etc...when Jay Friedman and James Gilbertsen are off. Peter Ellefson (from Indiana) is a frequent substitute on tenor, among others. I recall seeing one of Charlie's Northwestern students that I met, filling in on one of those Shostakovich works that call for six bones.

I've often seen Rex Martin (and others, don't know them by name) playing tuba for Rite of Spring, Symphonie Fantastique, some of the Shostakovich symphonies like the 4th, etc...

Jay Friedman usually does the bass trumpet work, which he's done since he was Assistant Principal back when Reiner was conductor.

Don't know about the Civic, but when the CSO has needed an alto or tenor sax, in the past it has been the contrabassoonist, Burl Lane and for their Bolero under Muti a few weeks ago, it was William Buchman, the Asst. Principal bassoonist.

He'll have it out for the CSO brass concert on December 20th, in conjunction with the Mid-West Clinic, which was a sellout last year and will be sure to sell out this year as well.

I don't see anything else this season, but I have a hunch that the composer in residence, Osvaldo Golijav, might write for it again for a commissioned work in February, since he included it last season on a new piece for the Silk Road and CSO. I could be wrong.

A few years ago, he used it for a Brahms 1st performance, but he normally plays that on his bass.

Not that it's a big deal, but I think you mean Mahler 7.
