Howdy-
Along those lines I did a survey of professional musicians recently about daily rountine habits. I've posted the link on here before and haven't updated recently incase you have already seen them, but incase you haven't:

For those of you who have been kind to send back the survey more recently, I hope to eventually recalculate and include your statistics. However, I have benifited myself from reading your responses- so thank you!

The results look like the ongoing routines one uses. Many of the responses are not the same as those used to actually win the job. Routines for students and those seeking employment through an audition would have much more intense schedules.

I agree. I think a student would get a false sense of the time and dedication needed to win a job by reading the results of this survey.

Hello,
Having read and compiled the surveys I would have to agree. The average performance time entered for many of these performers isn't what I would recommend (or nearly as much as I feel I have to do myself) to be attempting to win jobs.

Some further interpretations of the results could be:
When one looks at all the demands of a full time teaching job or performing job, they just might not have the time that they once did. Add to that the fact that many people are responsible for their families at this point in their lives, and it makes the idea of 5-6 hours of daily practice impossible. It seems as if they don't abandon practice but have limited time to do so. As a result- their practice must be more focused. Their livelyhood depends on being able to maintain and further develop the physical components necessary to play- and that is where a daily routine comes into play.

Just my two cents- the point of this survey is not to say you only need 1-2 hours a day of practice- but to provide stats on professionals' daily routine habits.

Your survey, like most any research, provides real insights. I was just trying to put some perspective on what the results might mean. Maintenance can be easily done with 1-3hrs/day.
