With multiphonics, the only way around it is through it.
What I recommend to start, is just getting used to making both sounds at once. Play a low note that's comfortable to hold, and then make a sound with your voice at the same time. Do what I call the "chainsaw"....hold the note and imitate the sound of a chainsaw revving with your voice. It's not going to be pretty, but it'll be fun. It's purely just to get used to what it feels/sounds like to make both sounds at once.
The next step is to hold a note and sing an interval above it. Usually, a major third is easiest to hold. Try singing an octave, major third, perfect fifth perfect fourth, minor seventh above whatever root note you choose. Again, just to get the nuances of making the sound happen.
In preparing a piece with musical lines....train each line individually before putting them together. Try these steps:
1) play the bottom line on tuba.
2) play the top line on a piano next to you. Sing with this. Get the motion of the line in your ear. If possible...play top line on piano with left hand while playing bottom line on tuba.
3) sing through the horn.
4) play and sing at the same time.
It's just a matter of coordination and practice. All guitarists/bassists/pianists that sing while playing learn the same skill.
Good luck!
