Kevin Wass in Las Vegas

I had the opportunity to hear Kevin Wass perform Mahler 5 with the Las Vegas Music Festival this afternoon. This young man is a fine player and played the part as well as I have ever heard live or on a recording. Nice big fat sound, very present but never overbearing(read:unmusical), and incredibly musical at every turn. If he teaches as well as he plays, Texas Tech could very well become the next hot thing. Congrats on a great job!!!
FWIW: The orchestra is made up of eveything from the Concertmaster of the National Symphony to mere children. James DePriest conducted and while it wasn't the Vienna P.O., it was a damn good blow, incredibly musical and a sheer enjoyment to listen and watch. Nice to see enthusiasm.
By all reports, Kevin did a GREAT Kraft Encounters last week and a fantastic "Etre Ou ne Pas Etre" on Friday. Wish I could have been there.
Cheers,
Chuck
