Weird Mouthpiece Question...

Post by ZNC Dandy »

I love my old Perantucci 9 mouthpiece. Its a great partner to my 2155R, especially when I want to add some punch. Now the question...is there a mouthpiece with the same rim, cup shape, depth, etc, etc. But with a wider diameter 33mm or larger? Any help is, as always, much appreciated.

These mouthpiece comparisons are in diameter order
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Why are you wanting to go wider than 33 mm? If you get too wide you may lose placement on your embouchure vertically as well as horizontally. The largest I can go is 32.5 mm with a moderately narrow rim, like a Wick 1 or a contoured 18 style rim, and still keep optimum placement on my embouchure.

I find it most comfortable to play on mouthpieces around that diameter. I'm willing to try most anything though. Its just a bit snug for me to feel completely comfortable. Thanks for the input so far guys.

No Bach 'pieces though. I greatly prefer this chart: http://www.dwerden.com/mouthpieces/tuba.cfm

And here's another chart: http://www.brass-forum.co.uk/Resources/ ... s/Tuba.htm

I've been using 33.25 mm for over a decade and have had few complaints.

Everyone's different.

I have never heard of a PT-9 (I cannot find it listed), so don't know what profile it is.

However, I can tell you the PT-48 (33.5 mm diameter) works well on my Cerveny Kaiser. Worth a try!

There's a damn good reason there are no Bach comparisons: Bach doesn't make their mouthpieces according to "spec." Routinely, they will be larger. For example, recent Bach 18's, including the one I had and measured it with digital calipers, were 1.28 instead of the "spec" 1.26.

If you want a Bach 18, get a Blessing 18. As others have said, it's the best 18 Bach never made.

If I recall correctly, the Dillon F1 is basically a PT-64 cup with Scott Mendoker's C tuba rim. I believe it's around 33.5mm. Perhaps Scott or Matt Walters can chime in on this. Dillons has a couple of brass ones and a bronze one listed under "Accessories, Used Tuba Mouthpieces" on their web site.

Actually, the Bach pieces are in the very top row of each section. They are the "standard" size to which the other mouthpieces are compared. Although IIIPopes is right about the mouthpieces not being exactly to spec. They seem to vary from decade to decade, as do the Hellebergs. I suspect this is true of most designs that have been around that long, whether intentional or not.
