Favorite Time to Practice?

Post by Mudman »

I'm curious to see if anybody else likes practicing after midnight. I enjoy turning on the Conan show or something like it and putting in a few hours on the horn around midnight.

When school starts I run a group warmup at 8:00 in the morning (yikes). This usually puts an end to the late night sessions.

I wait until after midnight also. Around that time, I can sneak into the university concert hall to practice instead of using a practice room. It makes it worth the wait.

Most all of my daily practice in the summer happens between the hours of 9pm and 5am. I work security in the summer, so I've got to be on a vampire's schedule anyway. I can't stand to be doing anything but getting ready for bed at 8am (in my case at least, it's probably genetic). But I deal with school the best I can.

Don Harry told me something interesting years ago. He asked if I do all my eating at once every day. No? Then I shouldn't do all my practicing at once. Although others have recommended the same thing, I really liked the analogy.

I would certainly like to practice more than once a day. Having a job, family, and other things in my life make this a luxury I can seldom afford. Often, it requires a major effort to be able to sit down and practice. Mind you, it is not a lack of desire or dedication that make this difficult. I honestly LIKE to practice. Because of fatigue due to other responsibilities, I often don't FEEL like practicing.

Anyway, I echo the above post which states that I try to practice as early in the day as possible. This helps avoid those nasty changes in plan which often make practicing later an impossibility.

With work and family it defaults to evenings. I only wish I could get in a half hour before catching the train to downtown at 6am, but know I would be skinned alive if I tried.

Good point, David. Often I find that when I have TIME to practice, I am unable to do so because of the time of day. Why do people want to sleep when I want to practice? Have they no consideration at all?
