but it's reshaped me as a musician.

since i joined tubenet awhile ago i've received some good pointers, found a horn, and learned a lot from reading other people's stuff.. so here's giving a bit back... i've shared this with most musically minded friends of mine as it's really kind of reshaped the way i approach sound and music. this is about Evelyn Glennie the deaf percussionist whom some of you have undoubtedly heard and perhaps performed with. i had heard her playing on the radio and heard about her from folks who had seen her perform, but until i watched this video taken off www.ted.com it didn't really sink in. it's not tuba but i feel her message is univeral.

it's long, but if you have the time i found it really inspiring.

since watching this i have started to listen with my hands, feet, anything that comes in contact with my tuba or a vibrating surface when i play. i also listen to how the sound interacts with the room around me... whether it be an empty glass bowl that sings like crazy when i play B's too sharp or other vibrations in the room with different attacks or breathing.. it's a new way of measuring my resonance and experiencing the sound i love.

also when sitting in the concert hall listening to Bruckner 9, i could feel the entrances and the dynamic as well as hear them. it was awesome. anyway, it's put a whole new dimension to music and i just thought i'd share that. if you want to know more about her... http://www.evelyn.co.uk and i hope i can see her live some day. i find her playing mesmerizing (though my spelling may not be... and fyi, i never use caps because it is an awkward stretch for my little fingers and i am engaged in a passive-aggressive battle with tendonitis.. apologies to the english profs out there.)

cheers...
