Here are also some links to a recording of a group I put together ten years ago called the Mississippi Wind Band. Last summer I did some additional studio work on Irish Tune, the Berlioz symphony and the Stars and Stripes.

Ray Young and Ed Bahr played euphonium; Wade Rackley and Charles Shultz played tuba.

I hope you enjoy.

Thanks for you nice comments Wade. It was truly a great experience and has provided me much enjoyment as I listen to the recordings and reflect on my memories of it. I am very humbled by the whole thing. 99% of the tone you hear in the recording project is the result of great acoustics in the hall, wonderful large diaphragm Neumann mics and (the big surprise) an unbelievably good tube pre-amp made by Peavey. I didn’t do any enhancements to the tone other than to add a small amount of reverb as the microphones were placed only two feet behind the podium.

Thanks again,

Mark Howle

So, Mark, without mentioning specifics, I noticed that there is a Mississippi Wind Symphony still in operation, is that group descended from your efforts?

I don't know a lot about the Mississippi Wind Symphony but I think it is primarily made up of players from the central Mississippi area. I've never heard them perform.

The Mississippi Wind Band was made up of people from all over the state of Mississippi at the time, (1997). Players were mainly members of university music faculties from around the state with a few from the nearby states of TN, AR, and AL who performed regularly in one of the regional orchestras in Mississippi.
